A reporter should not be assigned to cover subject X unless he has as good an understanding of X as a baseball writer is expected to have of baseball.

  1. I’d like to think that would be especially true of science writers. It’s hard to believe that some journalists still take a “he said / she said” approach when reporting on fact-based subjects :-/.
